Anansi & Dinner with Tiger

Anansi’s heart was beating, he felt just like a winner.

Brother Tiger and his wife had invited him to dinner.

He tried on his new suit, with tie and shiny shoes.

Then he tried on his overalls; Anansi couldn’t choose.

Anansi decided to wear his suit, his bowler hat and tie.

As he posed at the mirror, his wife said, “my, my, my.”

“You should buy a gift for them, to show you’re being polite.”

“What a shame,” Anansi winked, “there’s not a penny in sight.”

But cunning Anansi had a plan, as he hurried along the way.

He clipped some roses from Monkey’s tree and made a nice bouquet.

Anansi, with his gift, scurried towards Tiger’s house to dine.

But as he crawled, he wondered why Tiger was being so kind.

Anansi suddenly recalled some of the naughty things he’d done.

In January he knocked on Tiger’s door, then ran away for fun.

In February he’d promised to give Crow a lift home from town.

Poor Crow stood with heavy bags; no Anansi could be found.

In March, was the very best, Anansi laughed with glee.

He pretended he was drowning, so Monkey dived into the sea.

“I don’t care, Anansi laughed, I’m so clever, I’m no fool.

I’ve been invited out to dinner because I’m absolutely cool.”

Anansi walked for several more miles, he was in an exciting mood.

Passing shops along the way, his only thought was food.

Anansi licked his greedy lips, delicious food danced in his head.

Fried chicken, sweet potato, rice and peas and slices of hard-dough bread!

Anansi called, “hello Crow,” as he strolled past old Crow’s tree.

Crow pulled an angry frown and flapped his wings, fur-ious-ly.

“I don’t care, Anansi laughed, I’m so clever, I’m no fool.

I’ve been invited out to dinner because I’m absolutely cool.”

Anansi called, “hello Rabbit,” as he strolled past Rabbit’s place.

Rabbit scurried off with speed, with a large, red fuming face.

“I don’t care, Anansi laughed, I’m so clever, I’m no fool.

I’ve been invited out to dinner because I’m absolutely cool.”

Anansi arrived at Tiger’s door and knocked with a rat-a-tat-tat.

Tiger’s wife welcomed him in, then kindly hung up his hat.

Anansi bowed politely and presented his lovely gift.

“Thank you, most kindly, dinner is going to be swift.”

What was that delicious scent floating past Anansi’s face?

“Please sit down at the table, and Tiger will say grace.”

“Dear God,” Tiger muttered, “we thank you for this day.

For gladly sending food to us, for this we can’t repay.”

“Amen,” smiled Tiger’s wife and rubbed her hands with joy.

“Amen,” said Tiger smiling too, “this meal we will enjoy.”

“Silly old Anansi, serves you right for being such a fool.

Now who is sitting at my table, not looking very cool?”

Anansi started sweating, how could he be so dim?

Four hungry eyes now waiting in readiness of eating him.

Did Anansi escape that day; what do you all think?

Well, more adventures you will see… just smile and wink.

Just smile and wink
